Milestones

The Barnett Shale Water Conservation and Management Committee continues to be a catalyst for information sharing by the natural gas industry for better understanding of the critical water management challenges in the Barnett Shale and evaluate water conservation opportunities, including water reuse technologies. Since its inception in 2006, the Committee has accomplished the following tasks:

• Commissioned an independent report, Fort Worth Basin/Barnett Shale Natural Gas Play: An Assessment of Present and Projected Fresh Water Use Water, for use by Texas agencies including the Water Development Board as well as interested stakeholders. (2008)
  
  
• Commissioned with the Barnett Shale Education Council a second independent report, An Update and Prognosis on the Use of Fresh Water Resources in the Development of Fort Worth Basin Barnett Shale Natural Gas Reserves, for use by the Water Development Board and other Texas state agencies as well as interested stakeholders. (2009)
  
  
• Studied more than 60 technologies that appear to offer Best Management Practices in water conservation, reuse and management in gas drilling operations.
  
  
• Commissioned, through a multi-million dollar grant from the non-profit Research Partnership To Secure Energy for America, a study of water reuse technologies and flowback water management in gas drilling operations in the Barnett and Appalachian Shales.
