Opportunities Pursued by Barnett Shale Companies to Reduce Freshwater Demand for Energy Development
• Flowback Water Reuse for Frac Jobs May Represent a Significant Opportunity
• Develop Water Treatment Technologies for Flowback Water Reuse. Existing Demonstrations:
- High Efficiency Water Distillation
- Deoiling and Membrane Processing
• Evaluate Alternate Sources for Industry Uses
• Develop Best Practices for Regional Water Handling and Management
Accomplishments
The Barnett Shale Water Conservation and Management Committee has been the catalyst for information sharing by the natural gas industry to better understand critical water management challenges in the Barnett Shale and evaluate water conservation opportunities, including water reuse technologies. Since its formation in 2006, the Committee generated a water use report that described current and projected water use needs in the Barnett Shale and has provided that information to State Agencies (such as the Texas Water Development Board) and to the general public. In addition, the Committee obtained information from several vendors on water recycling technologies. Some of the processes have proven capable of successfully treating early frac flowback water for reuse by industry.
