Some Water Use Facts Associated with Barnett Shale Development

• Water required for the drilling and completion of a
gas well averages approximately 3 million gallons
  per well.

• About 89 percent of this water demand is applied
to hydraulic fracturing, a critical step for
  stimulating natural gas production.

• Currently, about 1,500 wells are drilled in the 17
counties of the Barnett Shale each year,
incurring a water demand of about 12 million
   gallons per day.

• Water used for Barnett Shale development represents less than 1 percent of the total freshwater
use in the 17 counties of the Barnett Region as shown in the Bar Chart.
